Bachelor lifestyle
Nick Moran?s bachelor lifestyle is by no means unique ? single men account for just over a quarter of all housebuyers, according to Halifax, although the fastest-growing group of homebuyers is single women between 30 and 50.
To discover the enduring appeal of the lad?s pad, we spoke to three men who are selling their beloved adobes.
Fergus Sheils, 34 a City trader, has lived in his two-bedroom flat in Clapham Common for three years. It?s now on the market at ?625,000 with Foxtons.
?I chose it because the living room big enough for my pool table. The flat centres around that ? I?ve wanted a pool table in my house since I was a kid,? Fergus says. ?I?ve got a games machine and a big American fridge.
?I?ve had lots of parties over the years,? he adds. ?Usually at least one a month. The flat is perfect for getting a group of lads round and having a few beers.?
Fergus is not abandoning his bachelor lifestyle ? he?s moving to a bigger pad in his native Ireland.
Architect Ben Connop, 29, is leaving his bachelor ways behind. He is selling the four-bedroom house he single-handedly renovated into a sleek masculine home to buy a place with his girlfriend Sarah, 25.
He?s selling privately at an asking price of ?375,000. But he says it will be a wrench to leave the house in Lower Sudbury.
?This has been the perfect bachelor pad. On one side I have a fish-and-chip shop and on the other a pub. It?s great for entertaining. There?s plenty of room, the design is young and funky and there?s a sound system in the garden.?
Ben admits that impressing girls was at the back of his mind when doing up the place. ?Sarah was really impressed when she first saw it an I suppose the rest, as they say, is history.
Property entrepreneur Madush Gupta, 29, who also has a sideline in bars having just bought one in Mayfair, is leaving his two-bedroom loft apartment as he thinks ?Clerkenwell is over? and Bankside is now the ?cool place to be.?
?I designed this place myself and I?ve invested a lot of myself into it. I have four serious benders here a week. This place has been used and abused.?
Madush?s pad is on the market for ?599,000 through Thomson Currie
(020 7251 5666).
